Pondicherry magnetic observatory was commissioned in the campus of Central University, Pondicherry in the year 1993. It is well known that intense eastward current, centered over the dip equator, flows in the E-region of the ionosphere at about 105 km altitude. This phenomenon is known as equatorial electroject and the currents are restricted in a narrow latitude band of +/-3o. The boundary of the electrojet is often called as electrojet fringe region. During 1957 under IGY, a magnetic observatory was established in the campus of Annamalai University, Annamalainagar. As planned, this observatory was to be operated for three years only. However, considering the importance of magnetic measurements at the edge of the electrojet and with the courtesy of the University, the observatory was made permanent. Many mathematical models of earth's electromagnetic effects were worked out utilizing the data from Annamalainagar observatory. As considerable development activity was envisaged by the university in the closed vicinity of the observatory, it necessitated shifting of the observatory to an alternate site on permanent basis.

After careful examination of various sites in the fringe region, magnetic observatory was established at Pondicherry in 1993.

Simultaneous magnetic measurements carried out at Annamalainagar and Pondicherry during 1993 were analysed to find out the difference between two locations The observed average values of 'H', 'Z' and 'D' at Annamalainagar and Pondicherry for the year 1993 are shown in the table below.

  Pondicherry Annamalainagar Pondicherry- Annamalainagar
