ENVIRONMENTAL AND PALEMAGNETIC STUDIES
A Versatile Geophysical Technology: Rock and Mineral Magnetism
Transient climatic, environmental and pollution characteristics imprint their diagnostic signatures on magnetic minerals preserved in sedimentary sequences. Environmental magnetic technique decodes signatures contained in archival materials to visualize the past environments, climates and pollution indices. These studies were initiated at Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG), New Panvel by Prof. Nathani Basavaiah in the year 2000 through liberal instrumentation donations received from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany and support from IIG.
The sedimentary formations from diverse geomorphological and environmental circumstances across the entire Indian subcontinent and its contiguous oceanic realm are being investigated and results published.
