Prof. B. P. Singh

About Professor

  • Born in Bihar on the 18th August, 1937, Prof Bhisham Prasad Singh obtained an M.Sc. degree in Physics from Magadh University, Gaya and a Ph.D. degree from Queens University, Canada in 1972.
  • He was a Lecturer in Ranchi University, Bihar from 1958 to 1965. Subsequently he pursued his research career in Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad as a Scientist, during 1972-73, before moving to the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) where he spent the rest of his career. He served as the Director of the institute from 1991 until his retirement in 1997.
  • Prof. Bhisham Prasad Singh was instrumental in establishing the Solid Earth Geomagnetism. The geomagnetic depth sounding studies he initiated in India in the 1970s in collaboration with Dr. F.E.M. Lilley of Australian National University and Dr. B. J. Srivastava of the National Geophysical Research Institute led to the generation of electrical conductivity map for Indian lithopsphere.
  • Magnetotelluric, Global positioning System, paleomagnetism and environmental magnetism as well as the Ocean Bottom Magnetometric studies were also introduced by him in India. Most of these groups are recognized world over for their front ranking research activities. He played the leading role in the analysis and interpretation of the MAGSAT data.
  • He published more than 125 papers in international and national journals, and provided guidance to eight students in their Ph.D. degree work. During his tenure as Director, IIG had extensive scientific collaboration with IZMIRAN.
  • The Equatorial Geophysical Research Laboratory (EGRL) was established during Prof Singh’s tenure as the Director. He also played an active role in procuring the land for the present set up of the Institute in New Panvel, as well as for the K. S. Krishnan Geomagnetic Research Laboratory, Allahabad.
  • Prof Singh was fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (India) Allahabad as well as the Geological Society of India. He was Vice-Chairman, Division I (Internal fields) of IAGA during 1987-1991 and member of Working Group (I-3) of IAGA on Electromagnetic Induction in Earth and Moon.
