Magnetic Observatory Workshop held at EGRL, Tirunelveli

English

IIG has conducted a magnetic observatory workshop at Equatorial Geophysical Research Laboratory (EGRL), Tirunelveli, from 30 August to 01 September 2023. A total of 18 members have attended the workshop, including one from each observatory. Prof. Geeta Vichare formally welcomed the participants. Prof. S. Gurubaran gave the inaugural address and spoke about the importance of magnetic observatory data and the activities of EGRL since its inception in 1991. Mr. Paramasivan and Mr. K Jeeva, retired EGRL staff who have contributed to and nurtured the magnetic observations at EGRL, were invited as Guests of Honour during the workshop. The participants received presentations on magnetic survey techniques and compass calibration, followed by hands-on training on data processing and DIM processing software. Also, participants received updated information on maintaining magnetic observatory instruments and troubleshooting basics. The observatory instruments brought from all 12 observatories, such as DI-flux magnetometers and Proton precession magnetometers, were calibrated during the workshop. The workshop concluded on 01 September 2023 with a discussion on improving the data quality of the magnetic observatory.
