English

Many Schools and colleges frequently visit IIG’s magnetic observatories that has spread across the nation. IIG runs total twelve magnetic observatories spanning east-west and north-south region of our country. Understanding working of magnetic observatory, measuring magnetic field of the Earth, history of magnetism is always being the popular topics among the students/teachers visiting our magnetic observatories. IIG host a historic Colaba-Alibag magnetic observatory that has history of continuous magnetic field measurements dated back to 1841. Students/teachers visiting the magnetic observatory are given information about history of geomagnetism in India, role of Colaba-Alibag magnetic observatories in institutionalizing geomagnetism in India, the utility of network of magnetic observatories all over India. The students and teachers were also exposed to classical and modern instruments through visits to museum and the absolute/variometer rooms at Colaba-Alibag magnetic observatory. The care taken by the pioneers in constructing non-magnetic observatories is also explained.
